Safety

The ID.4’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Polestar 4 doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the ID.4 and the Polestar 4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Volkswagen ID.4 achieved a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the 2024 model year. This recognition was based on its impressive performance in the small overlap frontal crash test, updated side impact crash test, headlight evaluations, and pedestrian crash prevention testing. The Polestar 4 has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2024.

Warranty

Volkswagen’s powertrain warranty covers the ID.4 4 years and 50,000 miles longer than Polestar covers the 4. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Polestar 4 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 21 times as many Volkswagen dealers as there are Polestar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the ID.4’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Volkswagen vehicles are better in initial quality than Polestar vehicles. With 75 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Volkswagen higher than Polestar.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the ID.4’s turning circle is 6.7 feet tighter than the Polestar 4’s (31.5 feet vs. 38.2 feet). The ID.4 AWD’s turning circle is 1.8 feet tighter than the Polestar 4’s (36.42 feet vs. 38.2 feet).

For greater off-road capability the ID.4 has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Polestar 4 (6.8 vs. 6.5 inches), allowing the ID.4 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Volkswagen ID.4 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 400 to 600 pounds less than the Polestar 4.

The ID.4 is 10.1 inches shorter than the Polestar 4, making the ID.4 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The ID.4 is 6.2 inches narrower than the Polestar 4, making the ID.4 easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

Passenger Space

The ID.4 has .4 inches more front headroom, .1 inches more rear headroom and 1 inch more rear legroom than the Polestar 4.

Cargo Capacity

The ID.4 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Polestar 4 with its rear seat up (30.3 vs. 18.6 cubic feet). The ID.4 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Polestar 4 with its rear seat folded (64.2 vs. 54.2 cubic feet).

Towing

The ID.4’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the Polestar 4’s (2200 vs. 0 pounds).

Standard trailer stability control on the ID.4 uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Polestar 4 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Servicing Ease

A Service Interval Display is standard on the ID.4 to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for vehicle inspections, vehicle inspection based on odometer mileage. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Polestar doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the Polestar 4.

Ergonomics

The ID.4’s power mirror controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The Polestar 4’s power mirror controls are embedded in the infotainment system, seriously distracting drivers who have to adjust them while driving.

The ID.4’s Park Assist Plus can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Polestar 4 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
